An approach to the study of the syntactic structure and the discursive characteristics of private and literary letters of the XV and the XVI centuries

Abstract

The aim of this article is to carry out a quantitative analysis ofsyntactical structures and most common discourse markers used ina corpus of sixteen letters written between the end of the XVI andthe beginning of the XVI centuries. It is hoped that this analysis willallow to identify the main similarities and differences between literaryletters -such as the ones written by Fray Antonio de Guevara- andprivate letters -such as those written by Felipe II to his daughters orthe ones sent to a friend of hers by Saint Teresa de Jesus or to a friendof his by Lope de Vega. The degree of complexity of the periodsand paragraphs of this type discourse will especially be analyzed.In addition, the infl uence of the socio-cultural status of letter-writerson letter-writing will be studied. That is why the letters of semicultoswriters, an ignored group in most of books dealing with the historyof the Spanish language, have been analyzed as well.
