Abstract

The application of Rantsman’s morphotectonic method to the territory of Cantabrian shows its contemporary structure as part of an emerged and active macro block in the Iberian Peninsula. In this Northern macro block, 2 mesoblocks (East and West) where defined, with a total of 13 blocks, 10 morfoalignments of 2º-4º orders and 10 main intersection (order / quantity= 2º / 1, 3º / 4 and 4º / 5). The territory has a clear neotectonic differences with the neighbouring regions of Asturias and the Basque Country, regardless of their location. Its characteristics indicate less activity, due to the influence of efforts from the Pyrenees, the Cantabrian Sea and the Atlantic. There is a direct correspondence exists between the topography and the deep structure, as well as with the seismicity.
